LCP Girls Rally to Bring Home FSL Championship

The Lady Knights outscored the Sequoyah School Lady Griffins 11-0 in the final minutes of this year's Foothill Sports League championship game to preserve a perfect season and secure the school’s first-ever basketball title.

The game, played before a packed house at Glendale Adventist Academy, was a defensive struggle for three plus quarters, with Sequoyah holding what appeared to be an insurmountable 12-7 advantage with five minutes to play.  LCP center, Lauren Lundeen, ended a ten-minute LCP scoring drought with a three-foot jump shot off the glass to pull the Lady Knights to within 3.  A Leea Poulatian free-throw closed the lead to 2, followed by a steal and a quick basket by Dalia Rizkana to tie the game.  LCP point guard Leea Poulation scored the go-ahead bucket with Olivia Hope and Jordan Corbett putting the exclamation marks on the comeback with two fast-break layups in the final minute.

“I told them we needed to stop putting up outside jump shots and make some plays up the middle,” said LCP head coach, Peter Dangremond. “I never expected every girl on the court to respond like they did,” referring to each of LCP’s starting five making crucial baskets down the stretch. “I am so proud of how these girls stuck together and responded to adversity.”

LCP finished the 2015 season with a perfect record of 13 wins and no losses and were also winners of the FSL Eastern Division regular season title.

“This has been a long time in the making,” said LCP Athletic Director, Scott Albright. “We started this journey seven years ago with seven girls, one coach and some very supportive parents.  We may not have had a lot of wins during those early days, but all the girls, coaches and parents from that year to this have made important contributions to the growth of this program.  This trophy belongs to all of them.”

The Lady Knights are losing all but three players to graduation, but with an unbeaten JV team in the wings, hopes are high for a successful title defense in 2016.
