Roller Coasters Big Lab

Using the Giant Wall, students build a roller coaster and explore the concepts of gravity and energy. After a brief discussion with a facilitator about the forces involved to make roller coasters work students experiment with changing variables to investigate the effect of mass on speed, distance traveled, and energy.

Journey to Space 3D is an inspiring reflection on the remarkable achievements of NASA’s Space Shuttle program, including the assembly and launch of the International Space Station and the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope. Missions like these have taught us how to live, build, and conduct science in space and helped to build the foundation for future space exploration. The film, narrated by Patrick Stewart, also features a fascinating showcase of the exciting plans that are underway for the next giant leap into space: landing humans on Mars.

On Monday, February 1st, eighth graders will travel to the California Science Center to learn the science behind the roller coaster in the Roller Coaster Big Lab, and then travel into space via Journey to Space 3D. Students will depart LCP at 8:00 a.m. and return to campus at 1:30 p.m. PLEASE NOTE EARLY DEPARTURE TIME.

Students will need to bring a sack lunch, including snack and drinks, in a clearly labeled disposable bag. Please make sure that you do not order Freshlunches on a field trip day.

If you would like your child to attend this trip, please complete and return the attached Field Trip Permission form by Tuesday, January 19, 2016.
