Getty Villa Field Trip

Sixth Graders

Wednesday, April 26, 2017

The Getty Villa in Malibu is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. The Villa serves a varied audience through the permanent collection, changing exhibitions, conservation, scholarship, research, and public programs.

Guided lessons, taught by professional museum educators, allow students to study a limited number of objects in depth rather than tour the entire collection.  Lessons are highly participatory, and students work in small groups and engage in discussion, writing, role-playing, and, in some cases, art-making activities.

Art in the Ancient World

Students will experience the ancient world through investigating objects such as vases, sculptures, mosaics, and frescoes from the Museum’s collection. They will be encouraged to look closely at these artifacts and consider how the objects and ideas still have an impact on our daily lives today. The students will also identify ancient myths and the Greek and Roman gods, goddesses, heroes, and monsters depicted on works of art from antiquity, which will give them a better understanding of the role of myth in ancient society, daily life, and culture.

On Wednesday, April 26, 2017, sixth graders will travel to ancient Greece and Rome via the Getty Villa. Students will depart La Canada Preparatory at 9:30 a.m. and return to campus around 2:30 p.m.

Students will need to bring a sack lunch, including snack and drinks, in a clearly labeled disposable bag.  Please make sure that you do not order Choicelunch on a field trip day.

If you would like your child to attend this trip, please complete and return the attached Field Trip Permission form by Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
