California Science Center Field Trip

4th Graders

Wednesday, November 1st, 2017

Students will explore erosion and the movement of water using the Big Lab's 12 ft. long stream table in Exploration Grove. Students will then construct a stream table and design investigations to explore how the properties of materials affect the ability of the material to slow down erosion. A facilitator will guide students in thinking about the process of experimentation as they test out the permeability of different materials as a class. The program concludes with students designing a landscape that will protect a house from erosion.

Discover the epic, true story of explorer Henry Bates' fascinating 11 year journey through the visually stunning and biodiverse Amazon rainforest as a young man who risks his life for science in the 1850's.

Amazon Adventure 3D traces the extraordinary journey of naturalist and explorer Henry Walter Bates - the most influential scientist you've never heard of - who provided "the beautiful proof" to Charles Darwin for his then controversial theory of natural selection, the scientific explanation of the development of life on Earth. Audiences will be wowed by the mind-boggling examples of camouflage and mimicry and inspired by Bates' endless curiosity and determination to explore the wilds of nature from the time he was a young boy.

On Wednesday, November 1st, fourth graders will travel to the California Science Center to experience the lab, Erosion. Students will also take a trip on the Amazon with Henry Bates and view the beauty and diversity of this great river via IMAX in Amazon 3D. Students will depart La Canada Prep at 8:00 a.m. and return to the campus at 2:00 p.m.

Students will need to bring a sack lunch, including snack and drinks, in a clearly labeled disposable bag. Please make sure that you do not order Choicelunch on a field trip day.

If you would like your child to attend this trip, please complete and return the attached Field Trip Permission form by Wednesday, October 25, 2017.
