Boats and Balance

By building their own model sailboats, students investigate design and energy needed to move across the 40 by 20 feet Water Works pool. After becoming familiar with the boat names, students are given a variety of sizes for each part of the boats. They are encouraged to experiment with changing parts to see how they affect the performance of their boat. By keeping data in a class shart, students discover the importance of balance in sailing.

This is the tsue story of a 15,000-kilometer journey in the footsteps of one of the most devastating natural events on our planet: the Atlantic Hurricane.

Filmmakers teamed up with NASA to follow the footsteps of the Atlantic hurricane as it begins its journey as an ominous sandstorm in Senegal, heading west across the Atlantic building momentum as it tosses ships on growing swells, then crashes into the jungles of the Caribbean. Ants, lizards, bats, frogs, horses, men, rivers, ocean reefs... all bend before the power of this monsoon turned magnificent. 124 mph winds, 18 cyclones, 12 countries... the hurricane is the film's main charracter and the supporting cast consists of the men, women, plants and animals that encounters on its journey.

On Wednesday, November 8th, third-graders will travel to the California Science Center to participate in the lab, Boats and Balances, and experience the forces of a hurricane in the IMAX movie, Hurricane 3D. Students will depart The Learning Castle at 9:30 a.m. and return to the campus at 2:45 p.m.

Students will need to bring a sack lunch, including snack and drinks, in a clearly labeled disposable bag. Please make sure that you do not order Choicelunch on a field trip day.

If you would like your child to attend this trip, please complete and return the attached Field Trip Permission form by Friday, October 27, 2017.
