8th Grade Field Trip

Roller Coasters and IMAX Panda 3D

Friday, April 27th, 2018

Roller Coasters Big Lab

Using the Giant Wall, students build a roller coaster and explore the concepts of gravity and energy. After a brief discussion with a facilitator about the forces involved to make roller coasters work students experiment with changing variables to investigate the effect of mass on speed, distance traveled, and energy.

At Chengdu Panda Base in China, scientists are dedicated to protecting the species by breeding adult Giant Pandas in order to introduce cubs into the wild. This film follows one such researcher, whose passion leads her to initiate a new technique inspired by a black bear program in rural New Hampshire. What starts as a cross-culture collaboration becomes a life-changing journey for an American biologist who crosses an ocean to join her; a scientist from Inner Mongolia; and a very curious female cub named Qian Qian, born in captivity.

Captured with IMAX cameras, join Qian Qian on an exciting new adventure in the mountains of Sichuan as she takes her first steps outside her protected habitat, discovering her true animal nature... even as she faces the challenges of the unknown.

On Friday, April 27th, eighth graders will travel to the California Science Center to learn the science behind the roller coaster in the Roller Coaster Big Lab, and then get close and cuddly with Panda 3D. Students will depart LCP at 8:30 a.m. and return to campus at 2:45 p.m.

Students will need to bring a sack lunch, including snack and drinks, in a clearly labeled disposable bag. Please make sure that you do not order Choicelunch on a field trip day.

If you would like your child to attend this trip, please complete and return the attached Field Trip Permission form by Monday, April 9th, 2018.
