Event Date and Time:

Getty Villa Field Trip

Sixth Graders

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

The Getty Villa in Malibu is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. The Villa serves a varied audience through the permanent collection, changing exhibitions, conservation, scholarship, research, and public programs.

Guided lessons, taught by professional museum educators, allow students to study a limited number of objects in depth rather than tour the entire collection. Lessons are highly participatory, and students work in small groups and engage in discussion, writing, role-playing, and, in some cases, art-making activities.

The lesson explores Greek and Roman myths through the depiction of these stories on works of art from antiquity such as pottery and sculpture. Students will develop close looking skills to help them identify ancient myths and the various Greek and Roman gods, goddesses, heroes, and monsters. They will also gain a better understanding of the role of myth in ancient society, and how these stories affected the lives of ancient Greeks and Romans.

On Wednesday, April 10, 2103, sixth graders will travel to ancient Greece and Rome via the Getty Villa. Students will depart La Canada Prep. at 9:00 a.m. and return to campus around 3:15 p.m. Please note the late return time.

Students will need to bring a sack lunch, including snack and drinks, in a clearly labeled disposable bag. Please make sure that you do not order Freshlunches on a field trip day.

If you would like your child to attend this trip, please complete and return the attached Field Trip Permission form by Friday, March 29, 2013.
