Return of LCP Chess Tourney Proves Historic

After six weeks and seventy-one games, the Fifteenth Annual LCP Chess Tournament concluded on May 31st with sixth grader Gayane Pogosyan taking home the all-school title.
Gayane was a perfect 12-0-0 and became the first girl to ever win the tournament.  Third grader Sebastian Azarian, who became the first player in tournament history to advance to the championship match from the first round of consolations, finished in second with seventh graders Pavel Markov and Simon Pogosyan finishing third and fourth respectively.

The double-elimination tournament began on lucky April 13th with twenty-six competitors. Due to separate lunches, the tournament was split into two brackets, LCP Lower School and LCP Upper School.  Gayane, Sebastian and sixth grader Julia Yen finished one, two, three in the LCP Lower bracket while Simon, Pavel and eighth grader Sahen Kakadia, finished one, two, three in the upper school bracket.  The top-two players from each bracket then advanced to a single-elimination all-school championship bracket with the matches being played after school.  The best match of the tournament went to seventh graders Yash Jaju and Daniel Isaiants for their highly contested three-game consolation match in the LCP Upper bracket.

This is the first chess tournament since the pandemic lockdowns ended the 2020 tournament during the second round. To see this year’s completed brackets, click here. For a list of past winners, go to https://www.thelearningcastle.com/chess-tournament-champions.
