Spring Musical Is a Huge Success

On Saturday, March 22nd, The Learning Castle and La Canada Preparatory’s performing arts department presented their annual spring production, A Rabbit Hole Through Time, before near-capacity crowds at La Canada’s own Lanterman Auditorium.
The revue was comprised of scenes from four musicals: Willy Wonka, Alice in Wonderland, Into the Woods and Hamilton.  Each grade level, starting with second, took on a different musical.

The production featured director and LCP administrator, Justin Whalin, co-director/ musical director and TLC music teacher, Kristin Maitlen and choreographer and TLC/LCP dance teacher, Rakkell Villagomez.  Produced by TLC/LCP principal, Terry Villanueva, A Rabbit Hole Through Time, ran for two performances and incorporated over 430 students.  The annual musical is made possible by the financial support of TLC and LCP’s Annual Giving Campaign and The Strait Up Foundation.

“After the success of our last two shows, we wanted to continue giving performance opportunities to as many of our students as possible,” said director, Mr. Whalin. “By picking four different musicals, we were able to create over 45 leading roles!”

For Willy Wonka, the title role was played by Greg Grigoryants, Charlie was played by Abby Costandi, Violet was played by Rita Iskenderian and Emma Setyan, TeeVee was played by Sona Kistorian and Niko Grigoryan, Veruca was played by Ariana Kurestian and Maneh Ovsepyan, Augusta was played by Victoria Avagyan, Ms. Gloop was played by Arina Avagyan and Emma Sarkisyan, and the Candy Kids were played by Delsa Akmal, Emily Amirian, Michael Chammas, Iva Isayan, Sona Kistorian and William Schroeder.  For Alice in Wonderland, Natasha Karapetian and Nicole Manukyan played Alice, Nicole Salehpour played the Queen of Hearts, Eileen He played the White Rabbit, Sasoun Keshishian played played the King of Hearts, Kate Dekermanji, Mila Aynaszyan and Talin Karakachian played the Chesire Cats, and Julia Kuzoyan, Liana Morad, Nala Ghadimian, Rebecca Whalin and Rita Jarakian played the Flowers.  For Into the Woods, Farah Mashhoud played Snow White, Anais Rupchian played Sleeping Beauty, Alexandra Oganesyan played Cinderella, Isla Youssefian, Jacqueline Grigoryants and Sarah Chammas played the Step Sisters, Nicholas Semerjian played Prince Charming, Narek Arzumanian played Flynn Ryder, Danyela Tavanian and Chloe Babaian played Rapunzel, Zoya Qureshi played Mother Gothel, Ava C. Avakian and Katherine Abramian played Little Red Riding Hood, and Charlotte Whalin and Emmy Kiureghian played Pascal. The final scene of the night was from Hamilton.  Dylan Polanco played the title role, Anahit Matevosyan played Angelica Schuyler, Arina Vahramyan played Peggy Schuyler, Natalie Abraham played Elizabeth Shuyler, Ben Kuzoyan played George Washington, and Caesar Hu played Aaron Burr. 

Others who helped make the production possible were Mark Seibert of Lanterman Auditorium, facility management; Christine Michael, props and set pieces; Gohar Abramyan, costumes; Heydi Vazquez, photography and videography; and Scott Albright, technical direction.

“We pride ourselves on our academic programs, but we also believe that the performing arts are a fundamental component of a well-rounded education,” said TLC/LCP principal and founder, Terry Villanueva. “Each year I’m astounded by the wide array of talent on display.”
